David Spelman is internationally known as a classical music publicist/strategist who for more than three decades has helped guide some of the most distinguished artists, institutions and brands.
David Spelman & Company represented the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in their collaborations with Itzhak Perlman, Dawn Upshaw, James Galway, Branford Marsalis, and Renée Fleming; released more than a dozen critically acclaimed recordings including the Grammy-winning "Shadow Dances"; performed more than 40 concerts in partnership with Carnegie Hall, and in many of Europe's great concert halls; toured Asia three times, and was the first American orchestra to perform in Hanoi since the Vietnam War; and was twice featured in "Live from Lincoln Center" national telecasts. The orchestra's unprecedented media coverage led to the publication of Leadership Ensemble: Lessons in Collaborative Management from the World's Only Conductorless Orchestra (Holt/Times Books) which has been translated into nine languages.
DS&C represented Argo Records (PolyGram/Universal Music Group), promoting the recordings and performances of composers and artists including: Henryk Górecki, Aaron Jay Kernis, Michael Torke, Michael Nyman, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Michael Daugherty, the Balanescu Quartet, Piano Circus, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The Houston Grand Opera’s world premiere of Michael Daugherty’s Jackie O was covered by Time, Newsweek, the New York Times, the Washington Post, USA Today, Spin, National Public Radio, and many other media outlets.
DS&C launched the New York Philharmonic's in-house record label. Their first release, The Historic Broadcasts 1923-1987, was a 10-CD set featuring 750 minutes of music, 21 conductors, and 18 soloists. The release received extensive international media attention and was nominated for two Grammy Awards.
